Women politicians hail late leader’s role
Women leaders have expressed their condolences over the death of former prime minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala.Women leaders have expressed their condolences over the death of former prime minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala. They praised the late Koirala for helping formulate several women-friendly laws and for his bid to ensure women’s rights in the constitution.
Nilam KC, who served as the minister for women, children and social welfare in the Koirala government, remembered the former PM as someone who viewed women’s issues positively. She also credited him for the passing of laws related to workplace harassment and witchcraft charges against women.
“The bills had been pending for over a decade. Thanks to his support and eagerness to see these laws formulated, we have the Workplace Harassment Act and Anti-witchcraft Act,” said KC. According to her, Koirala also listened to opponent and smaller parties.
Women politicians also hailed the late leader
for his encouragement to
set up the Mangala-Sahana Rehabilitation Centre to provide shelter for people victimised by physical and mental torture.
“Under his leadership, we got the new constitution, which is the best legal document we got as far as women’s rights are concerned,” said Sashi Shrestha, president of Inter-Party Women Alliance.
She also noted that the constitution has ensured
daughters the same right as their brothers to ancestral property.
