A bus driver set fire to a vehicle he was driving at Tripureshwar Chowk in Kathmandu on Monday, police said.

The bus, operated by Riddhi Siddhi Yatayat, was carrying no passengers when the fire broke out.

Dilip Ghimire, chief of the Kathmandu District Police Range, told the state-owned Rastriya Samachar Samiti that the driver deliberately started the fire.

The driver, identified as Dawa Lama, suffered burns to more than 90 percent of his body and is in critical condition, according to doctors at the Nepal Cleft and Burn Centre in Kirtipur.

“More than 90 percent of his body has been burned. His condition is very serious,” Shankar Rai, a doctor at the hospital, told Kantipur.

Police are investigating why he set fire to the bus.
