The District Police Office in Dhanusha arrested a man on charges of abducting and raping a 14-year-old Dalit girl.
The suspect allegedly held the teenager captive after she was lured from her home in ward 9 of Kshireswar Municipality in Dhanusha. According to the investigation officers, a local woman deceived the girl with promises of farm work before handing her over to the suspect.
The victim was initially raped on the bank of Basaniya stream. When the blood-stained girl began to resist and scream, the accused moved her to the residence of his brother-in-law in Aurahi. As her physical condition worsened, she was brought to Janakpur with the assistance of the same local woman.
"We intervened after the landlord grew suspicious and informed us on the fourth day of her confinement in Janakpur," said Deputy Superintendent of Police Ganesh Bahadur Bam, who is also the spokesperson for the District Police Office in Dhanusha. He said the suspect had raped the girl repeatedly. Police found the girl unconscious and in a critical state.
"Her condition was critical. She had been heavily drugged, and her injuries were so severe she required surgical stitches. She is currently traumatised and unable to speak, receiving treatment at a safe house,” said Bam.
Local Dalit rights activists expressed outrage over the incident. They demanded to probe the incident fairly and take stringent action against the guilty. Various reports show the rise of violence against Dalit women in Madhesh Province, often citing how caste-based discrimination and poverty complicate the pursuit of justice.
