Siraha prison inmates continue protest after arms, cash seizure
Authorities seize pistol, ammunition, cash during monitoring; inmates resort to arson and vandalism.Binay Aazad
Protests by inmates at Siraha prison continue despite authorities detaining 13 prisoners, including inmate leader Indrajit Yadav, on Monday.
They were taken into custody after monitoring inside the prison recovered a pistol, two rounds of ammunition, Rs120,000 in cash, and tobacco products. The inmates are currently under investigation at the District Police Office, Siraha.
Following Yadav’s detention, fellow inmates set fires inside the prison. Security personnel controlled the flames Monday evening using water jets, but the demonstration continued through the night.
During the protests, inmates have been vandalising property, throwing stones, utensils, and water outside, and verbally abusing staff. Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepali Army personnel have been deployed outside the prison amid concerns over potential escalation.
Siraha Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel said the administration is preparing to use force to control the situation and relocate the involved inmates. “They are needlessly misbehaving,” he said. “We will respond accordingly.”
Paudel also stated that a District Security Committee meeting has been convened to decide further action.
