Rastriya Swatantra Party ministers have decided not to resign from their positions immediately though they had earlier announced to quit the government on Thursday.
Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, Labour Minister Dol Prasad Aryal, Youth and Sports Minister Birajbhakta Shrestha and Education Minister Sumana Shrestha of the RSP reached the prime minister’s official residence Baluwatar in the morning with a plan to submit their resignations to the prime minister.
But they returned without submitting their resignations citing the prime minister’s request for their continuity for now. RSP leaders said they changed their mind after listening to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. They said Dahal informed them that he was planning to seek a confidence vote in the House and that he sought the RSP’s support in his plan.
“Our ministers didn’t submit their resignations after the prime minister told us that he was planning to seek a trust vote in the House and sought our support for that,” RSP Chief Whip Santosh Pariyar said. “We have now suggested to the prime minister to initiate the process to seek the trust vote soon.”
The CPN-UML withdrew its support and recalled all its ministers from the Cabinet on Wednesday.
With the withdrawal of the support by the largest coalition partner CPN-UML, the Dahal government has been reduced to a minority.
The two largest parties of the House of Representatives–Nepali Congress and CPN-UML on Monday forged an alliance to form a new government and both the parties have asked the prime minister to tender his resignation and pave the way for forming the new government as he had already lost the majority.
A central work execution committee meeting of Nepali Congress on Wednesday endorsed the agreement reached with the CPN-UML.
Dahal however has decided not to resign immediately.
A secretariat meeting of Dahal’s party CPN (Maoist Centre) on Tuesday decided that the prime minister will not resign and he will instead seek a vote of confidence in the House.
