A record 1,008 climbers successfully summited Mount Everest during the 2026 spring climbing season, according to Nepal’s Department of Tourism. Officials said the figure is the highest ever recorded on the world’s tallest mountain since expeditions began.
Ram Krishna Lamichhane, director general of the Department of Tourism, said the season set multiple new records, including the number of successful climbers, permits issued and royalty revenues collected from Everest expeditions.
Khim Lal Gautam, coordinator of the temporary field office established at Everest Base Camp, said the total number of successful ascents had reached 1,008 as of Friday morning.
“ As many as 1,008 climbers successfully summited Everest under this year’s spring mountaineering season,” Gautam told Kantipur.
The Department of Tourism said the high number of summits reflected favourable weather windows and strong participation from international expedition teams.
According to department data, the government collected around Rs1.08 billion in royalty fees from Everest expeditions during the season.
Officials said the previous record for successful Everest ascents in a single season stood at around 900.
Nepal marks Everest Day every year on May 29 to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953.
