Sambhav Sirohiya, the managing director of Kantipur Media Group, has resigned, expressing his discontent with Kantipur’s recent stories.
In a message addressed to all KMG employees, he said his resignation would take effect immediately.
In his resignation note, Sirohiya said he had serious disagreements with the group’s recent reporting—particularly stories published about then Home Minister Sudan Gurung. He wrote that the stories were sensational and sloppy. “I cannot lead a transformation [of KMG] while lending my name to journalism I do not believe in,” he wrote on his resignation note.
Kantipur had published details of Gurung’s suspicious financial dealings, citing sources from investigative agencies. Until then, the outlet had reported the facts mentioned in those details along with unanswered questions. However, in his resignation, Sirohiya said the reporting had undermined the government with unfounded allegations even before it could start working properly.
On Thursday morning, Sirohiya posted screenshots on Facebook and X of links and images from Kantipur Television’s social media posts about Gurung, stating, “This looks like mission journalism, but I do not know whose mission it is.”
Recalling that when he took over leadership of KMG a few years ago, the institution was running an annual loss of more than Rs 600 million, he said recent reforms had put the company on the verge of profitability. “I am proud of every person who made this possible,” he wrote.
