Police have concluded that 16-year-old Inisa BK’s death was not related to gang rape.
The District Police Office, Surkhet, said it has completed the investigation and submitted the report to the District Government Attorney’s Office on Wednesday.
On March 7, the teenage girl, originally from ward 6 of Badakholi in Gurbhakot Municipality and residing in Birendranagar Municipality-1 for her education, was found unconscious and bleeding in the Janajagaran Community Forest in Birendranagar-4.
Despite being rushed to the provincial hospital by local residents and police officers, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The post-mortem report confirmed she died from severe hemorrhage caused by lacerations to her genitalia. Forensic specialist Dr Arvin Shakya of Bheri Hospital said the injuries were consistent with forcible sexual contact.
The family and relatives of Inisa have been protesting, demanding a fair investigation and punishment for those responsible. They have alleged that she was gang-raped and murdered.
The incident has triggered protests and public pressure in several parts of the country, with calls for justice for the victim. Her parents have accused police of delaying efforts to establish the actual circumstances of her death, 19 days after the incident. They have refused to claim the body until they are ensured justice. Her body has remained in the mortuary of Karnali Provincial Hospital for the past 19 days.
Following the incident, police took a 16-year-old boy into custody and began an investigation. Police also arrested three others on suspicion of involvement.
In the 16-year-old suspect's preliminary statement, the boy said that Inisa became unconscious due to excessive bleeding following physical contact with her.
According to police, the post-mortem report also showed that she died due to excessive bleeding caused by a deep internal injury to her genital area.
Mohan Jung Budhathapa, Deputy Superintendent of Police and spokesperson for the District Police Office, Surkhet, said the investigation report has already been submitted to the government attorney’s office.
The report concludes that Inisa’s death was caused not by gang rape but by severe injury sustained during physical contact with the main accused, leading to excessive bleeding.
Police said a case of rape and homicide has been filed against the main accused, seeking life imprisonment. Cases have also been filed against the three others on charges of homicide for failing to attempt to rescue the victim despite being present at the scene.
The victim’s family suspected rape and homicide, prompting the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) to get involved in the investigation. Police said advanced technology was used during the investigation.
