Parties working to pick MPs for proportional representation
Six parties that crossed the three percent vote threshold have secured seats under the PR category.Post Report
With the final results of the proportional representation election to the House of Representatives public, all six parties that have crossed the 3 percent vote threshold are busy choosing the names from their closed lists of candidates.
The six parties must submit the final lists of candidates for proportional representation to the Election Commission by Sunday.
The CPN-UML, which has been relegated to a distant third position, selected its candidates on Saturday.
After the lists are submitted, the Election Commission decides how many candidates from each inclusion category must be elected.
The commission reviews the lists submitted by the parties and makes a final announcement. According to the commission, of the total 110 proportional seats, the Rastriya Swatantra Party has been allotted 57, the Nepali Congress 20, the UML 16, the Nepali Communist Party 9, the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) 4, and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) 4 seats.
Having won 125 seats in the direct (first-past-the-post) category, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) received 57 seats in the proportional representation system for securing a record popular vote.
It obtained 47.84 percent of the total valid votes, which is the highest vote percentage ever received by a single party so far.
The RSP has called a meeting of its secretariat on Sunday to decide the names of its members of parliament under the proportional representation quota.
As instructed by party president Rabi Lamichhane, a Secretariat meeting has been called for Sunday, said the party in a notice. The meeting will be held at 10:00 am at the RSP office in Banasthali.
Likewise, the Nepali Congress has called a meeting of its work execution committee for Sunday. According to acting chief secretary Krishna Prasad Dulal, the meeting will take place at 1:00 pm at the party’s central office, Sanepa. The main agenda of the meeting is to select members of the House of Representatives from among the candidates from the proportional representation closed list, based on the number of seats the party has received, and to send the final list to the Election Commission.
The UML and the SSP, which became a national party in its first attempt, were the first to finalise the names. While the UML picked 16 from its closed list, the SPP selected the four.
Lekh Raj Bhatta, a deputy general secretary of the UML, said the party’s secretariat meeting held at Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s residence in Gundu on Saturday finalised the list.
Along with party vice-chair Ram Bahadur Thapa, Kul Bhakta Shakya, Bhumika Subba and Ganga Devi Shrestha have been selected from the indigenous women/men category, while Padma Aryal, Tuka Bhadra Hamal and Yashoda Kumari Baral are from the Khas Arya women’s group, Bhatta said. The party has chosen Guru Prasad Baral and Pushpa Raj Kandel from the Khas Arya men category.
Kripa Ram Rana Tharu has been selected from the Tharu cluster, while Bishnu Maya BK and Nita Ghatani are from the Dalit community. The party has also decided to send Ringala Yadav and Yashoda Kumari Yadav to Parliament from the Madhesi women’s category, while Chandreshwar Mandal represents Madheshi men. The UML has nominated Sajita Yadav Siddiqui as a proportional representation lawmaker in the Muslim women category.
According to the SSP, Mandira Moktan will represent the indigenous women category, Ambika Sangraula the Khas-Arya women category, Radhika Ramtel fills the Dalit quota, while Purna Limbu will represent the indigenous janajatis.
According to Mohan Kumar Shreshta, the RPP spokesperson, a meeting of the party’s central work execution committee on Sunday will finalise the names of proportional candidates.
