Royalist Gen Z groups urge President to sack interim government
Twenty-three less prominent youth groups in a memo say PM Karki’s government has ignored demands of September revolt.Post Report
Twenty-three youth groups identifying as Gen Z submitted a memorandum to the President on Thursday calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
These groups were not among the leading organisers of the September 8-9 Gen Z movement that toppled the then UML-Congress coalition government, and most are considered to have monarchist leanings. They said that the current interim government has failed to address the movement’s demands.
The memorandum, submitted at the President's Office, asks the President to sack Karki’s interim government and facilitate the formation of a new government.
The youth groups have criticised the Karki government for failing to take action against those involved in major corruption cases, amend the constitution to provide for a directly elected prime minister, or address their core demands.
Additionally, they said the government has not taken action against those responsible for suppressing the movement, ensured treatment for the injured, or provided adequate compensation for the families of martyrs. A total of 76 people were killed in the September protests when the government used brute force against the unarmed youths protesting corruption and a social media ban.
In the memorandum, the groups have requested the President to ask the current government to resign and mediate to form a new one under their leadership.
Many of these Gen Z groups are less prominent and are not recognised by the prominent Gen Z groups that led the September protests.
The memorandum states, "The government formed on the basis of the revolt has ignored all expectations, is focussed only on holding elections, and has left the government directionless."
It continues: "This rebellion and the martyrdom were not just for early elections. Therefore, we, the 23 Gen Z Alliance, along with the injured and martyr families, demand that the government immediately address the demands of the protesters."
The memorandum further states, "If the government is unable to fulfill the demands of the protesters, we respectfully request the honourable President to intervene and mediate the formation of a new government under our leadership."
The groups have warned that if their demands are not met, they will initiate another peaceful movement and pressure campaign against the Karki government.
