Authorities have formed six-party political coordination committees in the flood-hit districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot to help organise relief distribution and other emergency response efforts, officials said.

Shambhu Prasad Regmi, chief district officer of Nuwakot, said representatives of six nationally recognised political parties, the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Shram Sanskriti Party, had been included in a political facilitation committee.

The committee will coordinate relief distribution through local governments, Regmi said. A similar mechanism has been established in neighbouring Rasuwa, one of the districts hardest hit by the August 26 Bhotekoshi floods.

The move follows a decision at an all-party meeting on August 27 to put local governments at the forefront of relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas. The meeting also agreed to establish an all-party mechanism at the central level to improve coordination.

Four days after the meeting, the government began handing responsibility for relief distribution to local governments.

The government had initially relied on security agencies to distribute relief through a centralised, single-channel system. The approach drew widespread criticism, with local representatives and others arguing that sidelining local governments had made relief distribution less effective.
