Karki takes charge as Nepal Police Inspector General
New police chief assumes command as the force rebuilds after deadly September unrest.Post Report
Home Secretary Rameshwar Dangal on Thursday conferred insignia on newly appointed Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
A Cabinet meeting on Monday decided to promote Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karki to the security force’s top post.
He assumed office as the 33rd IGP of Nepal Police from today, succeeding outgoing IGP Chandra Kuber Khapung, who retired after completing his tenure.
Karki joined the Nepal Police as an inspector on March 31, 1998. He was promoted to AIG on April 28 this year and had been serving as the chief of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office since September 9. Among the candidates for promotion were AIGs Rajan Adhikari, Manoj KC, and Siddhi Bikram Shah.
Karki takes charge at a challenging time for the security force, which is still recovering from the aftermath of the violent unrest of September 9 that left 76 people, including three police personnel, dead and caused widespread destruction. More than 450 police barracks, public properties, and private establishments were burnt down or looted during the incident.
Speaking after receiving his insignia, Karki became visibly emotional while remembering the police personnel who lost their lives during the September unrest and pledged to strengthen law enforcement, maintain law and order, and enhance the force’s effectiveness in crime investigation.
If the current 30-year service provision remains unchanged, Karki will lead the Nepal Police until March 30, 2028.
