President Paudel leaves for Qatar to attend Second World Summit for Social Development
The President will address the main session in Doha and meet Qatar’s Amir and UN Secretary General.Post Report
President Ramchandra Paudel left for Doha on Monday morning, leading the Nepali delegation to attend the Second World Summit for Social Development scheduled from November 4 to 6 in the Qatari capital.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President is visiting at the invitation of Qatar’s Amir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
Vice President Ramsahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Qatar’s Ambassador to Nepal Mishal Mohammed Al-Ansari, senior government officials, and heads of security agencies were present at Tribhuvan International Airport to see him off.
A contingent of the Nepal Army presented a guard of honour to the President on the occasion.
President Paudel is scheduled to address the main session of the summit on November 4. During the visit, he will also hold separate meetings with the Qatari Amir and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
The summit, being held 30 years after the first one in Copenhagen in 1995, will discuss issues such as global inequality, demographic imbalance, and the impact of technology on societies.
The Doha summit is being jointly organised by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the Government of Qatar.
According to UN DESA, the United Nations General Assembly, through resolutions 78/261 and 78/318, decided to convene the World Social Summit in 2025 under the title “Second World Summit for Social Development.” Convened at the level of heads of state or government, the summit aims to address the gaps and recommit to the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and the Programme of Action, and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
Nepal, a member of the United Nations since 1955, currently chairs the UN Economic and Social Council.
President Paudel is scheduled to return home on November 6 after completing his official visit.
