Four major roads linking Panchthar to neighbouring districts and the Tarai region have been blocked after floods and landslides triggered by continuous rainfall since Thursday.
The disruption has affected routes connecting Panchthar with Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and other adjoining districts. The Phidim–Phalaut section, which connects the district headquarters Phidim to India’s West Bengal through Phalelung Rural Municipality, has been blocked since Thursday night.
According to the Panchthar Infrastructure Development Office, floods in the Pheme river, which separates wards 1 and 11 of Phidim Municipality, eroded a diversion, forcing authorities to halt vehicle movement.
Similarly, the Mid-Hill Highway remains blocked at Rijalbhir in Yangwarak Rural Municipality due to a landslide, police said. Vehicle movement has also been halted along the Mechi Highway due to landslides and road collapses at several points.
The Ilam District Administration Office said the newly opened track at Rajduwali, cleared after last month’s heavy rainfall, is again sinking, while landslides have also struck the alternative route via Tilkeni–Simlagola. Authorities have suspended traffic along the section from Thursday evening, citing rising flood and landslide risks.
Meanwhile, the Tamor Corridor connecting Dharan of Sunsari to Panchthar and Taplejung via Mulghat in Dhankuta has also been obstructed. Traffic came to a halt after the water level rose in the Nawa river along the Panchthar–Dhankuta border.
