Family members of those killed in the recent Gen Z protests have declared they will not accept the bodies of their loved ones until their demands are fulfilled.
The relatives, along with the injured, have also formed a struggle committee to press for their rights.
Gathering outside Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday, the families said they were waiting to meet her directly.
Kamal Subedi, a relative of one of the victims, said that a verbal agreement had been reached with the prime minister on Saturday, with a written commitment expected the following day.
The families are demanding that all those who died during the September 8-9 demonstrations be declared martyrs, that state honours be provided during the funerals including a funeral procession around the Ring Road, and that families receive not only immediate financial support but also pension entitlements at secretary level.
Prime Minister Karki, upon assuming office, had announced Rs1 million in compensation per victim. However, families say more comprehensive measures are needed to properly recognise the sacrifice of those killed.
