Around 40 Nepalis deported from US arrive in Kathmandu today
Undocumented Nepalis face increasing deportations under Trump’s second term.
Post Report
Around 40 Nepalis deported from the United States are set to arrive in Kathmandu on Sunday.
Anjan Neupane, spokesperson for the airport’s immigration office, said a chartered flight carrying the deportees is scheduled to land at approximately 4:15pm.
Since the start of US President Donald Trump’s second term, a total of 140 Nepalis have been deported from the US, according to Nepali immigration officials. In the first week of March, the US had similarly deported eight Nepalis via chartered flight. Some of them told the Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau of Nepal Police during interrogation that they had entered the US by illegally crossing the borders of 12 different countries.
Trump’s administration launched an aggressive crackdown on undocumented immigrants beginning January 22, two days after he assumed office for a second term. Under the direction of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the US has continued to detain and deport undocumented migrants, including Nepalis.
According to the Department of Immigration, the annual breakdown of deported Nepalis from the US was 38 in 2021, 24 in 2022, 25 in 2023, and 53 in 2024.
ICE has been actively detaining individuals who have already received final deportation orders but had not yet been taken into custody.
