All the 11 Nepali nationals who were in the vehicle that came under fire from the Mexican security forces near Guatemala-Mexico border on October 2 are alive, said the Embassy of Nepal in Washington DC.
However, three of the Nepali nationals aboard the vehicle sustained injuries in the shooting by the Mexican forces.
“No Nepali national died in the reported incident,” read the statement by the embassy.
Following the recent media reports, the embassy inquired with the relevant agencies of the Mexican government about the status of Nepali nationals in the Mexico-Guatemala border incident on October 2, it has said.
“Altogether 11 Nepali nationals were in the vehicle which came under fire from the Mexican security forces, out of which three were injured and are currently undergoing treatment and all 11 Nepali nationals are currently in detention of the Mexican immigration authorities,” the embassy wrote on X on Saturday morning.
The embassy is in contact with relevant Mexican authorities and will update further on the incident with more relevant information, it said.
The embassy said it enquired and confirmed about their status from the relevant authorities after recent media reports citing death of a Nepali national in the border shooting incident.
Earlier, the international news agency Reuters reported that six migrants died after Mexican soldiers fired on a group of 33 migrants traveling in a pick-up truck that had tried to evade a military patrol.
Another 10 migrants were injured in the incident on Tuesday evening, the news agency said. The group included people of Egyptian, Nepali, Cuban, Indian and Pakistani nationality, though the statement at the time did not specify the nationalities of the deceased.
