Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that violent activities similar to those that took place in the past won’t be allowed in future in Nepal.
Speaking at the launch of a book ‘Into the Fire’, authored by Captain Rameshwar Thapa in Kathmandu, on Saturday, Prime Minister Oli expressed disagreement with the statement made by former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also CPN (Maoist Centre) chair, who had earlier opined that Nepal should learn a lesson from the two other South Asian countries–Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Dahal, in his public statements for the last couple of days, often referred to recent political upheaval that forced Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina Sheikh to resign from the post and flee the country. Two years ago, then Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to step down following a months-long protest against the government.
Nepal is not a ‘photocopy machine’ of any other country, and such scenarios are not possible here, Oli said.
“Nepal has its own identity, civilisation, and culture. What happened in Bangladesh will not happen here. We are committed to strengthening democracy and the constitution we fought for. Those who stand against democracy cannot intimidate us,” Prime Minister Oli stated. “To those who loudly suggest we should learn from others, I want to make it clear—anarchy, disorder, and violent politics are no longer possible in Nepal, and they will not be permitted.”
Recalling the time when Maoist ‘resorted to indiscriminate violent activities’, the prime minister claimed that he had strongly opposed the violence and had also initiated dialogue to find a political solution to the problem.
Speaking at the same programme, former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba remarked that Captain Rameshwar Thapa had played a crucial role in forming the current ruling coalition.
Nepali Congress President Deuba acknowledged that Thapa had played a vital role in bringing Prime Minister Oli and himself closer.
“He (Captain Thapa) has personally helped me a great deal, and he has also assisted the party. Even though Captain Thapa is close to Oli's party, he is a supporter of everyone and someone who aids all. That’s how I see him. There’s no secret about it,” Deuba said. “He played a key role in bringing Oli and me closer and in forming the present [Congress-UML] coalition.”
