Yadav said he couldn’t stay in government in the changed political context.Post Report
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population Upendra Yadav resigned from the post on Monday.
Yadav, also the chairman of Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal saying that he couldn’t stay in the Dahal-led government any longer in the changed political context.
Similarly, Minister of State for Forest and Environment Deepak Karki from the same party also tendered his resignation.
Yadav’s party pulled out of the government on the heels of its split.
On May 5, Ashok Rai, the federal council chair of the Yadav-led Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, along with six other lawmakers and 30 central committee members of the party split the JSP-Nepal to form a new party Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP). The JSP-Nepal had altogether 12 lawmakers in the House of Representatives.
The Rai-led faction submitted an application at the Election Commission to register the new party on May 5. The next day, the election body registered the Janata Samajbadi Party under the leadership of Ashok Rai.
The party’s pull out from the government will not have immediate impact on the Dahal government at the centre.
The coalition still holds a majority with 77 seats of the CPN-UML (excluding the Speaker and a suspended lawmaker), 32 of the Maoist Centre, 21 of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, seven of the newly formed Janata Samajbadi Party and 10 seats of the CPN (Unified Socialist).
Earlier on Sunday, the CPN-UML and the Maoist Centre withdrew their support to the provincial government in Madhesh which is led by Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav of the JSP-Nepal. The two parties’ withdrawal of the support has left the provincial government in minority.
