Bagmati Province Governor Yadav Chandra Sharma has called on provincial assembly members and political parties to show a majority to stake the claim for the post of Chief Minister and form a government in the province within five days.
The office of the Province Head, through a notice on Thursday, has called on the provincial assembly members to present the majority through the support of two or more parties represented in the provincial legislature to be appointed the chief minister by January 9, as per Article 138 (2) of the constitution of Nepal.
“The provincial head calls on provincial assembly members to show majority through the support of two or more parties represented in the provincial legislature to claim the post of Chief Minister by 4pm on Monday,” reads the notice issued by Prakash Chapagain, spokesperson at the office of the provincial chief.
To form a government in the Bagmati province, any party must have the support of 56 provincial assembly members out of the total 110. As of yet, the formation of the provincial government is still unclear.
In the 110-seat Bagmati provincial assembly, the Congress has 37 members, UML 27, Maoist Centre 21, RPP 13, Unified Socialist seven, Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party three and Hamro Nepali Party has two seats.
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party, backed by 61 votes of the coalition partners, could stake a claim for the post of chief minister.
However, the Nepali Congress, the largest party in the provincial government, could also secure a simple majority with the backing of the RPP and the Unified Socialists as they require only 19-votes to reach the majority.
