The government has announced a national mourning and public holiday for Tuesday and decided to fly the national flag at half-mast in government offices and Nepali missions abroad to mourn the demise of historian and polymath Satya Mohan Joshi.
Joshi passed away on Sunday at age 103 while undergoing treatment at the KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, issuing a statement on Monday, said the government has decided to declare a public holiday for Tuesday to mourn the demise of the distinguished historian.
Joshi was undergoing treatment for prostate and heart-related ailments since September 23 and was shifted to the intensive care unit on October 10 when his condition did not improve.
On Sunday, Joshi’s mortal remains were kept on the premises of the Lalitpur Metropolitan City where hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds including political leaders, cultural conservationists, literature lovers, art enthusiasts, teachers and students paid their tributes to the late historian. Also, a contingent of Nepal Police presented a guard of honour to Joshi at the metropolitan city office before the body was taken back to Kist Hospital.
Joshi had last year pledged to donate his body to the hospital for medical research.
