Twenty-four days after being appointed the country’s executive head, Prime Minister KP Oli is seeking vote of confidence in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday, where he is set to secure a two-thirds majority for the first time in the post-1990 era.
Among 10 parties and an independent representing the Lower House, Oli is widely expected to garner support of six parties and the independent lawmaker. Political observers say he is set to secure over 76 percent of the total strength in the HoR.
Article 73 of the constitution makes it mandatory to get the vote of confidence from the HoR within 30 days since the appointment as the Prime Minister of the country. President Bidya Devi Bhandari on February 15 had appointed CPN-UML Chairman who also secured the support of CPN (Maoist Centre) as the PM of the country. Along with the lawmakers from the UML and Maoist Centre, the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal, the Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal, the Rastriya Prajantra Party (RPP), the Rastriya Janamorcha and an independent candidate will vote for Oli. As many as 210 lawmakers from the 275-member strong HoR will be voting for Oli when the proposal of vote of confidence will be tabled in Parliament on Sunday.
“Our party will stand for PM Oli for good governance, stability, economic prosperity and corruption-free administration,” RPP said in a statement. The Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party, which had not made its stand clear until Saturday evening, is likely to vote for him. That leaves only Nepali Congress and its ally in the recent elections Naya Shakti Party-Nepal in the opposition. The two parties have 64 seats—hardly make up around 23 percent of the total strength of the House.
The Parliament Secretariat has slated 3pm for for voting in the confidence motion. Newly elected Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara will table the motion for the voting in the House of Representatives. The left alliance, which is on its final bid to make a single party, has been working to induct the Madhes-centric parties—RJP-N and SSF-N—into the government for a commanding two-thirds majority in the House. Both the regional parties have announced they would support Oli and Bidya Devi Bhandari in the presidential race.
