A total of 83 candidates filed their nominations on Wednesday for the National Assembly (NA) elections scheduled for February 7. 

With 17 candidates elected unopposed, there will be contests among 66 candidates for 43 seats. However, the Election Commission (EC) said it will announce the winners on January 29 at the time of publishing the final list of candidates. 

The voters will elect 56 members in the 59-member National Assembly through a secret ballot, while three are appointed by the President on the recommendation of the government, according to the constitution. Each province elects eight Upper House members, including three women, one Dalit, one differently-abled or minority and three from the open category.

There are a total 2,056 voters, comprising 1,506 chiefs and deputy chiefs of local governments and 550 provincial assembly members. As per the ordinance on the National Assembly election, weightage of a vote of provincial assembly member is 48 while it is 18 in the case of local government representatives.

According to the EC, there are 26 candidates under the women category, 28 under the open category, 14 under the Dalit category, 15 under the minority/differently abled category.

The candidates had filed their nominations at offices of election officers based in Morang, Dhanusha, Lalitpur, Kaski, Dang, Surkhet and Doti in seven provinces from 10am to 4pm. EC Spokesperson Navaraj Dhakal said nomination process went peacefully in all centres across the country.

The elections of the Upper House will pave the way for electing the candidates under the proportional representation (PR) to the House of Representatives (HoR) and formation of a new government.  

According to the Office of the Election Officer, three women candidates including a serving state minister have been elected unopposed in Province 1. NC’s Sarita Prasai, who is also the minister of state for Agriculture, and UML’s Nainakala Ojha and Maoist Centre’s Bina Pokharel have been elected unopposed. 

In Province 2, nine candidates have registered their nominations for eight positions. Three women, one Dalit and one from minority community have registered their candidacy. A candidate each from the NC, the Maoist Centre and the Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal have been elected unopposed under the women category. 

Provinces 3, 4 and 6 are set for an all-out contest, with 17 candidates vying for Upper House seats from Province 3 and 12 each contesting from Provinces 4 and 6. 

In Province 5, two UML candidates and an NC candidate have been elected unopposed under the women category. The UML has picked Meena Budha and Komal Oli, while the NC has fielded Anita Devkota.

A total of 10 candidates have filed their nominations in Province 7. Two UML candidates and one from the NC have been elected unopposed under the women category in the province. Likewise, three candidate one each from the UML, the NC and the Maoist Centre have been elected unopposed under the open category.
