Former home minister presented before court for remand hearing in Gen Z protest crackdown case.Post Report
Former home minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak was produced before the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday after his arrest on Saturday morning.
He was brought to court today, as it was a public holiday on Saturday. According to court registrar Tirtha Bhattarai, the hearing for remand extension is scheduled before Judge Ananda Shrestha. Before this, Lekhak was taken to the government attorney’s office.
The government arrested Lekhak from his residence in Katunje, Bhaktapur, citing the implementation of recommendations made by a commission led by former Special Court chair Gauri Bahadur Karki.
The commission had linked Lekhak to alleged negligence and reckless conduct that resulted in human casualties during the September Gen Z protests, and recommended a criminal investigation.
He is currently being held in Maharajgunj.
Police on Saturday arrested former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and Lekhak in connection with a culpable homicide-related case linked to the alleged suppression of the protests.
The arrests follow a formal complaint from the Home Ministry and subsequent investigation, which led to arrest warrants.
The commission has recommended prosecution under Sections 181 and 182 of the National Penal Code for criminal negligence, with a possible sentence of up to 10 years. It has also named several other senior officials for legal and departmental action.
Authorities say 77 people were killed during the protests, while public and private property worth billions was damaged.
