Baglung road repair work ‘ineffective’
Santa Bahadur Shrish of Hugdishir-4 in Baglung has to walk for two days to reach the district headquarters.Prakash Baral
Like Shrestha, many people living in remote VDCs have no option other than walking to the district headquarters as the condition of gravelled roads connecting the areas is too bad for vehicles to ply during the rainy season.
The District Development Committee records, however, show that Hugdishir-Baglung road has already been made motorable.
Locals said the Decentralised Rural Infrastructure and Livelihood Project had repaired the road section. Besides this, the Project also repaired two other road sections and gravelled another one in the district, but none are motorable now.
Local Development Officer Bharat Gautam said they allocated around Rs 1.2 million to repair Rijalchok-Tarakhola road and around Rs 2 million to repair Deurali-Bareng section last year.
CPN Unified leader Rishiram Roka said locals are compelled to travel on foot during monsoon as the condition of the roads is miserable.
Rita Thapa of Kushmisera said people in the area are compelled to walk as the Maldhunga-Kushmisera road too has not been repaired in time. LDO Gautam said they have cancelled the contract with Pragati Construction which was assigned to gravel the road.
Harilal Kandel of Bihu-1 said the Project gravelled 25 kilometres of road from district headquarters to Ghodabadhe with a budget of Rs 110 million but it damaged within a year. He said the road section is currently being repaired by the Mid-Hill Highway Project.
