One dead, scores hit by floods, landslides
Heavy rainfall for the past three days has triggered floods and landslides in different parts of Udayapur district.DSP Sapkota said Nir Bahadur Rai of Katunjebabala VDC died after being swept away by flooded Murtiya stream on Saturday. A second man has been reported missing in the incident.
Flashfloods in local streams have affected Beltarbasaha, Rampurthoksila, Hadiya, Jogidaha, Katunjebabala, Chaudandi, Mainamaini and Siddipur villages. Similarly, landslides and floods have obstructed the traffic movement in various parts, including the Gaighat-Katari stretch where transport service has come to a halt for the past two days. Floods in different places have also disrupted the vehicular movement along the Chatara-Rampurthoksila route, said Madhav Khatiwada, the secretary of Rampurthoksila VDC.
Power supply has also been obstructed in various parts of Udayapur after floods swept away the electric poles.
Victims demand relief
Families of people who were swept away by the August 15 floods at Gulariya-9 in Bardiya district have complained that they have not received any relief materials from the government so far.
Gobinda Chhetri, whose lost his father, mother, and a daughter in a flood, said the government has not offered any help to his family. He said only the body of his father was recovered after flood while his mother and daughter were swept away by the flood never to be found again.
Chhetri has accused that the government officials who visited the village to collect data on flood victims did not record the names of some flood victims. Likewise, 15-year-old Bir Bahadur Khatri, whose mother and sister were swept away in the disaster, said his family too has not received any relief from the government.
A total of 135 people who were displaced in floods have been taking shelter at a football field in Tulsipur.
Chief District Officer Tej Prasad Poudel, who is also the coordinator of the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee, said they plan to distribute Rs 100,000 to families of the victims killed in the incident.
