Long-route public transport, cargo fares come down

The Department of Transport Management on Wednesday reduced the fares for public vehicles and cargo carriers plying on long routes following the decrease in diesel prices.
The rates were revised according to the ‘auto pricing mechanism’ and would come into effect from Wednesday, the department said in a notice.
Under the system, the government, which regulates the fares, can revise fares up and down whenever the prices of petroleum products fluctuate by more than 5 percent.
The fare on passenger vehicles has been slashed by 3.2 percent.
The fare of cargo carriers plying on hill roads has been reduced by 4.19 percent. The fare of cargo carriers plying in the Tarai area has been slashed by 4.65 percent.
“The revised fares are applicable to the vehicles moving through two or more provinces on the national-level routes," the notice reads.
With the latest revision, the fare in the Kathmandu-Dhangadhi-Sitanadi-Sanfebagar route, which is 899.6 kilometres and the longest, will now cost Rs2,696. Earlier, it was Rs2,782.
The Nepal Oil Corporation reduced the prices of diesel and kerosene by Rs10 per litre each, effective from Tuesday mid-midnight.
With the price revision, diesel and kerosene cost Rs155 per litre each.
The oil monopoly, however, kept the price of petrol unchanged at Rs175 per litre.
