Dealers of high-end motorcycles have reported “higher-than-expected” growth, thanks to increasing popularity of the machines among the youths.
High-performance bike brands such as KTM, Royal Enfield and Ducati are engaged in cut-throat competition to capitalise on the growing demand and, the market is witnessing regular upgrades and new launches in the segment.
“More than 5,000 units have been sold since our inception because of the price and performance offered by the KTM bikes,” said Amit Raj Chalise, marketing head at KTM division of HH-Bajaj. “Keeping in mind the rapid growth, we are planning to launch new outlets around Nepal within two to three months.”
KTM currently offers two models—the Duke and the RC—from two outlets inside the Valley and six outside. Both these bikes come in 290cc and 390cc engine options.
Chalise said the company is introducing upgraded versions of the bikes each year and customer reviews are in favour of its expansion strategy. “The company is planning to organise events like bikers meet, country tour and campaigns to consolidate our market presence,” he said.
Dugar Brothers and Sons, authorised distributor of Royal Enfield, said they have surpassed market expectations. “Customers are ready to wait for more than a month to purchase our bikes. Currently, we are selling more than 200 units per month,” said Rudra Jung Shah, sales manager at Dugar’s Enfield section, adding the company targets to sell 3,500 units this fiscal year.
At present, five variants of Royal Enfield bikes are available from more than 20 outlets across the country. The company plans to launch the new Royal Enfield Himalayan within the next two months. “In line with the growth strategy, the company plans to boost the market share to 10 percent from 5 percent this year,” he said. Italian performance motorcycle brand Benelli recently rolled out four models—the Benelli TNT25, Benelli TNT300, Benelli TNT600i and Benelli Zenzero150 in Nepali market.
“Benelli was premiered during the 2015 NADA Show and 60 units are already rolling in the Nepali streets,” said Saurav JB Rana, chairman of KTM International Trading. “Growing demand for the TNT300 and TNT600i has prompted us to add new models. We plan to launch 400cc and 500cc variants by the end of 2016.”
Rana said bike enthusiasts have taken the company’s move positively. “Feedbacks regarding riding experience, suspension and enthralling sound have encouraged us to hike our projections,” said Rana.
