Nepal reports 12,338 cases as rapid antigen tests added to daily infection tallies

Nepal on Thursday reported 10,052 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the nationwide infection tally to 887,769.
Similarly, 2,286 people tested positive in a total of 6,490 antigen tests, according to the Health Ministry.
As of Thursday, 5,075,205 PCR and 907,823 antigen tests have been carried out across the country.
A total of 21,007 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
In its regular situation report, the ministry did not mention the death toll over the past 24 hours. It, however, reported four Covid-19-related fatalities.
The countrywide death toll has now reached 11,632. The number of active cases stands at 57,328 and the rate of infection positivity is 47.85 percent.
According to the World Health Organization, if the positivity rate, or the number of tests that return positive for every 100 tests, is more than 5 percent, the pandemic is supposed to be beyond control.
According to the ministry, 818,809 infected people have recovered from the disease so far; 649 of them in the last 24 hours.
Nepal, on January 7, had reported 24 new Omicron cases. Earlier in December, three Omicron cases were confirmed.
The Health Ministry said tests conducted on 250 samples from among the 1,146 infected in the Nepali month of Poush had shown S-gene dropouts. Gene-sequencing performed on 24 samples returned Omicron results in all of them.
Kathmandu Valley recorded 6,981 new infections in the past 24 hours. Of these, 5,001 cases were confirmed in Kathmandu, 1,130 in Lalitpur and 850 in Bhaktapur.
In the past 24 hours, 888 new infections were recorded in Province 1, 349 in Madhes Pradesh, 7,556 in Bagmati, 531 in Gandaki, 380 in Lumbini, 74 in Karnali and 263 in Sudurpaschim.
On Thursday, 186 individuals infected with the virus were being treated in intensive care units across the country. Another 27—seven in Province 1, 18 in Bagmati and two in Sudurpaschim—were on ventilator support.
Nepal on Wednesday reported 9,502 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and four deaths. Similarly, 8,730 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and one death were recorded on Tuesday and 5,747 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and three deaths were reported on Monday.
