Nepal reports 4,636 cases as rapid antigen tests added to daily infection tallies

Nepal on Saturday reported 3,703 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the nationwide infection tally to 849,204.
Similarly, 933 people tested positive in a total of 4,144 antigen tests, according to the Health Ministry.
As of Saturday, 4,991,672 PCR and 885,026 antigen tests have been carried out across the country.
A total of 10,412 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
In its regular situation report, the ministry did not mention the death toll over the past 24 hours. It, however, reported four Covid-19-related fatalities.
The countrywide death toll has now reached 11,617. The number of active cases stands at 21,584 and the rate of infection positivity is 35.56 percent.
According to the World Health Organization, if the positivity rate, or the number of tests that return positive for every 100 tests, is more than 5 percent, the pandemic is supposed to be beyond control.
According to the ministry, 816,003 infected people have recovered from the disease so far; 350 of them in the last 24 hours.
Nepal, on January 7, had reported 24 new Omicron cases. Earlier in December, three Omicron cases were confirmed.
The Health Ministry said tests conducted on 250 samples from among the 1,146 infected in the Nepali month of Poush had shown S-gene dropouts. Gene-sequencing performed on 24 samples returned Omicron results in all of them.
Kathmandu Valley recorded 2,219 new infections in the past 24 hours. Of these, 1,591 cases were confirmed in Kathmandu, 486 in Lalitpur and 142 in Bhaktapur.
In the past 24 hours, 300 new infections were recorded in Province 1, 197 in Province 2, 2,614 in Bagmati, 212 in Gandaki, 221 in Lumbini, 31 in Karnali and 127 in Sudurpaschim.
On Saturday, 119 individuals infected with the virus were being treated in intensive care units across the country. Another 26—five in Province 1, 16 in Bagmati, three in Gandaki and one each in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim—were on ventilator support.
Nepal on Friday reported 4,204 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and three deaths. Similarly, 2,922 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and one death were recorded on Thursday and 2,448 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and two deaths were recorded on Wednesday.
