Nepal reports 5,087 cases as rapid antigen tests added to daily infection tallies

Nepal on Friday reported 4,204 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the nationwide infection tally to 845,501.
Similarly, 883 people tested positive in a total of 7,086 antigen tests, according to the Health Ministry.
As of Friday, 4,981,260 PCR and 880,882 antigen tests have been carried out across the country.
A total of 13,474 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
In its regular situation report, the ministry did not mention the death toll over the past 24 hours. It, however, reported three Covid-19-related fatalities.
The countrywide death toll has now reached 11,613. The number of active cases stands at 18,235 and the rate of infection positivity is 31.20 percent.
According to the World Health Organization, if the positivity rate, or the number of tests that return positive for every 100 tests, is more than 5 percent, the pandemic is supposed to be beyond control.
According to the ministry, 815,653 infected people have recovered from the disease so far; 306 of them in the last 24 hours.
Nepal, on January 7, had reported 24 new Omicron cases. Earlier in December, three Omicron cases were confirmed.
The Health Ministry said tests conducted on 250 samples from among the 1,146 infected in the Nepali month of Poush had shown S-gene dropouts. Gene-sequencing performed on 24 samples returned Omicron results in all of them.
Kathmandu Valley recorded 2,607 new infections in the past 24 hours. Of these, 1,913 cases were confirmed in Kathmandu, 377 in Lalitpur and 317 in Bhaktapur.
In the past 24 hours, 491 new infections were recorded in Province 1, 137 in Province 2, 2,917 in Bagmati, 291 in Gandaki, 201 in Lumbini, 23 in Karnali and 127 in Sudurpaschim.
On Friday, 111 individuals infected with the virus were being treated in intensive care units across the country. Another 25—six in Province 1, 14 in Bagmati, three in Gandaki and one each in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim—were on ventilator support.
Nepal on Thursday reported 2,922 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and one death. Similarly,2,448 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and two deaths were recorded on Wednesday and 1,981 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and one death were reported on Tuesday.
