Nepal’s Covid-19 tally reached 53,120 with 1,201 new cases reported on Saturday. The country also recorded 14 more deaths to take the Covid-19-linked fatalities to 336.
According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the active case count stands at 15,260. So far, 37,524 individuals have made successful recoveries—852 of them in the past 24 hours.
Kathmandu Valley recorded 431 new infections. Of them, 377 were confirmed in Kathmandu, 37 in Lalitpur and 17 in Bhaktapur districts. As of Saturday, the number of cases in the Valley has reached 11,139. A total of 8,641 cases were detected after the prohibitory orders came into effect on August 19 midnight.
“Eleven men and three woman died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours,” Dr Jageshwar Gautam, spokesperson for the ministry, said during a regular press briefing.
The three women are a 78-year-old from Parsa, a 76-year-old from Kathmandu and a 76-year-old from Tanahun. While two men aged 51 and 54 were from Kathmandu and two others aged 72 and 38 from Bhaktapur, two men aged 60 and 40 who also died of the disease are from Rupandehi. Five men aged 43, 61, 85, 45 and 51 from Sunsari, Chitwan, Syangja, Gorkha and Kaski, respectively, also succumbed to the disease.
The country has recorded 35,126 infections and 296 deaths since July 22. There were 17,994 cases and 40 Covid-19-related deaths until July 21, when the government decided to end the nationwide lockdown after four months.
According to the ministry, 111 individuals from Province 2, 102 from Bagmati Province, 50 from Province 5, 36 from Province 1, 22 from Gandaki Province, 10 from Sudurpaschim Province, and five from Karnali Province have died of Covid-19 so far.
As of Saturday, the government has carried out 831,362 PCR tests across the country.
“A total of 10,176 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours,” said Gautam.
In the past 24 hours, 377 individuals from Kathmandu, 107 from Makwanpur, 92 from Chitwan, 83 from Sarlahi, 81 from Rupandehi, 58 from Morang, 51 from Nawalparasi (East), 37 from Lalitpur, 35 from Kaski, 32 from Banke, 24 from Dang, 22 from Kapilvastu, 18 each from Bardiya and Surkhet, 17 from Bhaktapur, 15 from Bara, 14 from Sunsari, and 10 each from Parsa and Saptari tested positive for the coronavirus.
Infections were also recorded in nine people in Palpa, eight each in Mahottari, Rolpa and Kanchanpur, seven each in Siraha, Ramechhap and Syangja, six in Gorkha, four each in Rautahat, Dailekh and Kailali districts.
Three persons each in Baglung, Arghakhanchi and Nawalparasi (West), two each in Kavrepalanchok, Rukum (East) and Dadeldhura and one each in Ilam, Udayapur, Okhaldhunga, Jhapa, Dhanusha, Dolakha, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchok, Sindhuli, Tanahun, Lamjung, Pyuthan and Doti also tested positive for the virus.
“Six districts—Sunsari, Sarlahi, Kathmandu, Chitwan, Lalitpur and Rupandehi—have more than 500 active cases,” Gautam said. “Seven districts— Solukhumbu, Manang, Mustang, Humla, Mugu, Myagdi and Dolpa—don’t have any active cases.”
“As of Saturday, 160 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units across the country and 24 patients—21 in Bagmati, two in Province 5 and one in Sudurpaschim—are on ventilator support.”
Nepal on Friday recorded the highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases with 1,454 infections. The country reported five Covid-19-related deaths and 1,246 new infections on Thursday compared to six Covid-19-related deaths and 1,081 new infections on Wednesday and six deaths and 902 new cases on Tuesday.
