Tracing the spaces memory leaves behind
Indian artist Lalit Mohan Singh’s solo exhibition at Artudio transforms memories into layered paintings.Shrinkhala Chand Thakuri
Indian visual artist Lalit Mohan Singh is presenting ‘Inner Yards: Unmapped Memories’, a solo exhibition at Artudio’s Patan Wing in Nakabahil, Lalitpur, until July 15.
The exhibit is the culmination of Singh’s participation in the Artudio International Artist Residency (AIAR), during which he developed a new body of work in Kathmandu. The works move through ideas of memory, absence, light, and time, imagining spaces that are not usually found on maps yet remain familiar in feeling.
Singh’s paintings are built through layering, scraping, erasure and reconstruction. Doorways, walls, passages and shifting light appear not as direct architectural studies, but as traces of remembered spaces. His observations of Nepal's built and cultural landscape during the residency subtly inform the exhibition.
Originally from Dehradun, India, Singh spent nearly two decades as a marine engineer. His practice does not depict ships or oceans directly, but translates the psychological weight of maritime life, including silence, isolation, pressure and endurance, into serene visual narratives.
Through AIAR, Singh engaged with Nepal's art community through studio visits, gallery exhibitions, conversations with artists and cultural events. The residency supports artistic research, intercultural dialogue and creative exchange between international artists and Nepal's contemporary art scene.
