Gallery 108 is showcasing ‘UTSAV: In the Rhythm of the Jatra,’ a solo exhibition by visual artist Pradip Kumar Bajracharya, through Sunday, August 23.

Based in the Kathmandu Valley, Bajracharya draws extensively from the region’s festivals, rituals and living traditions. His works explore how these cultural practices shape collective memory, identity and a sense of community, translating the rhythms and visual richness of traditional celebrations onto the canvas.

‘UTSAV’ brings together a series of paintings inspired by the living festival culture of the Kathmandu Valley—including the Machhindranath Jatra, Bhoto Jatra, and Sindure Jatra—as celebrated in Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, Hadigaun, and other historic settlements.

Rather than documenting these events literally, Bajracharya’s work seeks to capture their essence, including the rhythm of the dhime baja, the movement of crowds, the colours of celebration, and the devotion of worshippers, translated through brushstrokes, line, colour, and composition.

A distinctive feature of ‘UTSAV’ is its formal unity—every painting in the series has been created in the same square format, a deliberate choice intended to build a sense of rhythm, harmony, and connection across the body of work.

“Art has always been a way of connecting with my culture, my memories, and the people around me,” says Bajracharya, who grew up surrounded by the festivals, rituals, and music of the Kathmandu Valley. “As our society evolves, culture continues to change. While change is natural, it is equally important to preserve the traditions and values that define us.”

Inspired by the belief that art and culture represent Nepal’s true treasures and heritage, ‘UTSAV’ is Bajracharya’s tribute to the living heritage that connects one generation with another.
