Where red forests bloom: Spring at Ghorepani and Poon Hill
Rhododendron season draws visitors to the popular trekking route, boosting local livelihoods.Mithun Kunwar
We grew up hearing the phrase, “Hariyo Ban Nepalko Dhan.” But Ghorepani and Poon Hill are places that teach us that even red forests are part of Nepal’s treasure.
Just as poet Madhav Prasad Ghimire wrote in his poem ‘Baishakh’, the barren hills frozen by winter have turned green with the arrival of spring. Flowers blooming in the season have filled the restless wind with fragrance. Along with the chirping of birds and the buzzing of bees, nature itself seems immersed in a sweet melody. Ghorepani and the Poon Hill region in Myagdi district are a perfect example of such unmatched natural beauty.
With the arrival of spring, rhododendrons in shades of red, pink, and white bloom across the trails, making the entire route look like a giant painting filled with colours by an artist. Every morning, the sunlight paints a golden glow across the white peaks of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre.

From a photography perspective as well, Ghorepani and Poon Hill in spring feel like an open studio of nature. The red rhododendrons against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains, the golden light of sunrise, the mist floating above the forests, and the calm Himalayan atmosphere bring every photograph to life.
With the arrival of spring, tourism activities in the region also increase significantly, directly contributing to the local economy. The livelihoods of local hotels, homestays, guides, and porters are closely tied to this natural attraction. During the rhododendron blooming season, not only foreign tourists but also domestic visitors from across Nepal flock to the area, making the villages feel vibrant and lively.

Located close to Pokhara, often regarded as Nepal’s tourism capital, this destination can be reached by trekking from Nayapul, while vehicles can also travel directly up to Ghorepani. Another option is the route through Beni and Pokharebagar. Since vehicles can reach Ghorepani itself, it has become a preferred destination even for those who cannot or do not want to walk long distances.
People from places like Kathmandu and Butwal can reach Ghorepani in a single day by private vehicle and relax beneath blooming rhododendron trees.

Amid today’s rapid urbanisation and busy lifestyle, the spring season in Ghorepani and Poon Hill offers people a chance to reconnect with nature. Every uphill climb here teaches patience, every blooming rhododendron inspires hope, and every sunrise carries the message of a new beginning.
