Farmers dump tomatoes in protest at Maitighar

Vegetable farmers dumped tomatoes at Maitighar Mandala on Wednesday, accusing the government of failing to provide adequate subsidies and support while pursuing import-oriented policies.
The farmers said the government's neglect of domestic agriculture had forced them to take to the streets in protest.

The daily price bulletin published by the Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market Development Board on Wednesday also shows that tomato farmers are receiving extremely low prices for their produce.
According to the board’s official data, the minimum wholesale price for small local tomatoes was fixed at just Rs8 per kg, while the maximum price stood at Rs12 per kg. The average wholesale price for small local tomatoes was Rs9.50 per kg.

Meanwhile, tomatoes produced using tunnel farming technology fetched an average wholesale price of Rs14.60 per kg, while large Nepali tomatoes averaged Rs38.75 per kg.
