Beginning the research

I use AI at the beginning of the research process. It helps me identify possible themes, references, keywords and sources that I can explore further. Instead of asking it to complete the research for me, I use it to understand where I should begin and what questions I should be asking.

Preparing for a production

Before rehearsals begin, AI can help organise the early stages of thinking around a play. I may use it to explore the historical background of a subject, understand unfamiliar terms or identify different interpretations of a text. It gives me an initial overview, which I then develop through reading, discussion and observation.

Supporting grant writing

I sometimes use AI while preparing grant proposals, festival applications and project descriptions. It can suggest a basic structure or help arrange the information more clearly. Once I have that framework, I rewrite the content to reflect the project accurately and make the language sound like our own.

Creating promotional content

AI is also useful when we are developing social media posts, captions or promotional material for a production. Since theatre groups regularly need to communicate about rehearsals, performances and events, having an initial draft saves time. I then edit it according to the tone and identity of the production.

Refining communication

At times, I use AI to simplify a paragraph, shorten a message or present the same information in a more accessible way. This is useful when communicating with different audiences, including performers, collaborators, festival organisers and the public.

A practical collaborator

For me, AI works best as a supporting tool. It helps me begin research, organise information, develop basic structures and handle repetitive writing tasks more quickly. This gives me more time to focus on rehearsals, performers, storytelling and the creative decisions that shape the final production.
