In ‘Grand Rehearsal’, nothing goes to plan

Mandala Theatre Nepal presents ‘Grand Rehearsal’, a satirical play about an amateur theatre group. Beginning on April 24, the play will run for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
‘Grand Rehearsal’ is directed by Umesh Tamang, with translation by Anup Neupane and Umesh Tamang, and is produced by Buddhi Tamang. Theatre artists Anup Neupane, Milan Karki, Sudip Khatiwada, Ruja Raut, Rakshya Thapa, Santosh Giri, Amir Tamrakar, Sujan Ghimire, Shreesesh Shrestha, Bal Bahadur Rai, and Raja Babu Karki are going to be onstage.
‘Grand Rehearsal’ features a play-within-the-main-narrative in which theatre artists try to stage a murder mystery on set. But everything starts going wrong: from the props collapsing to misunderstandings of acting cues.

With the humorous actions followed by mishaps, the play tries to depict the reality of live theatre. Amid the comedy, it reveals the dedication of the performers who continue their work despite minor setbacks.
“Grand Rehearsal is a fun play based on the famous Broadway production titled ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’. But in this production, we have incorporated the experiences of our own theatre artists as we deliver to Nepali audiences. In a chaotic political and social context, we are doing this production to seek space where audiences can laugh without hesitation and also can feel the process of making art,” says Somnath Khanal, the co-founder of the theatre.
