Southern Cross University offers support to its Nepali students amid crisis
Counselling, assignment extensions, and academic accommodations offered to ease pressure.
Post Report
Southern Cross University in Australia has announced a set of support measures for its Nepali students following concerns raised about the ongoing situation in Nepal.
Anup Adhikari, the university’s student ambassador for this year, informed the administration about how the crisis back home was affecting students’ mental health and academic performance. He highlighted that while the pressures of student life are already heavy, the unrest in Nepal has added significant emotional strain, with many students struggling silently.
In response, the university circulated an email outlining available support services to all Nepali students. These include access to counselling, assignment deadline extensions, and other academic accommodations.
Adhikari thanked the university for the initiative and encouraged other students to openly communicate their concerns with their institutions, noting that such steps can ease the pressure many face.
Similarly, a day ago, Digital creator Riju Poudel spoke at the University of Sydney, addressing representatives from the Australian Human Rights Commission, multicultural affairs leaders, university deans, and government administrators. She urged them to acknowledge what is happening in Nepal, to recognise the toll it is taking on Nepali people and international students in Australia, and to commit to providing real, meaningful support.
Poudel writes on Instagram, “Universities have since confirmed that they are on high alert. Mental health hotlines, national emergency lines, and suicide prevention services are ready to answer your call whenever you need.”
