When thinking of Pokhara, many envision serene lakes, majestic mountains, and thrilling adventures. Adding to the many adventurous activities in the city, hot air ballooning, which offers a fun experience to those seeking a unique aerial perspective, has recently become popular among adventure tourism enthusiasts visiting the capital of Gandaki Province.
The only hot air balloon service in Nepal is operated by Balloon Nepal Pvt Ltd. Bikram Bade, the president of Balloon Nepal, mentioned that the company, initially offering flights up to 3,000 feet above ground level, now provides trips up to 9,000 feet above ground level.
During the hot air balloon ride, passengers can enjoy scenic views of Pokhara, the many lakes in and around the city, Pumdikot, Sarangkot, and the expansive mountain range. Observers can even witness sunrise and sunets during the flight.
The hot air balloon has an envelope, resembling a balloon, which is filled with air using internal fans. Once the balloon takes shape, gas combustion heats the air, lifting the balloon. The pilot controls the airspeed, and a 32-square-meter basket, suspended beneath the 21-meter-high balloon, accommodates up to eight passengers simultaneously.
When riding, individuals should warm clothing, including gloves and a hat, to avoid feeling cold when the balloon reaches high altitudes. Sport shoes would be more comfortable over sandals or heels, and don’t forget to bring along your binoculars to observe distant views up close.
