More than a children’s tale
‘Shyal Singha’ uses the story of a jackal raised among lions to address contemporary concerns about identity and alienation.Mokshyada Thapa
Ek Theatre is staging ‘Shyal Singha’, a play based on the Nepali curriculum’s fable tale.
Directed by Tirthraj Vishwakarma, it explores the contradictory nature of two animals: the jackal, an opportunistic omnivore and the lion, a powerful predator.
This play is about identity and existence. It explores the story of a jackal raised in a lion’s family and questions where it will ultimately belong and how it will discover its true identity.
“The theme presented in this story is not limited to fiction alone; it reflects the reality experienced by many people in today’s society. On the one hand, we are gradually losing touch with our own identity for various reasons; on the other, humanity itself seems to be fading.

“The story addresses these issues, and we felt that Ek Theatre should tell such stories, which is why we chose this play,” says the theatre team.
Although the re-enactment of animals is challenging, it is rooted in conveying human experiences and emotions through animistic elements. The actors were able to find a sense of comfort in the struggles and experiences depicted in the story.
Mainly curated for children, it invites the audience to interpret the story through their own perspectives.
