Krishna Bahadur Shrestha and Sarita Shrestha of Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur, are in deep shock after three of their children were swept away by the Bering stream in ward 4 of Gosaikunda Rural Municipality, Rasuwa, on Saturday. As of Monday afternoon, all three family members remain missing, with search teams continuing their efforts to locate them.
The missing include Sanita Shrestha, 26; Sanskriti Shrestha, 24; and Kisan Shrestha, 20, all from the same family, along with Rabi Shrestha, 23, of ward 10 in Bhaktapur Municipality.
Sixteen people set out for Langtang on Friday morning. After spending the night at Hotel Bamboo & Lodge in Gosaikunda, they continued towards Langtang on Saturday. Four of them were swept away by a sudden flood while crossing the Bering stream.
Sanita, who had returned from Dubai nine days earlier after working there for four years, went on the trip with her brother and sister. Their uncle, Keshav Shrestha, said Sanita was swept away first, followed by Sanskriti, who tried to rescue her. Kisan jumped in to save his sisters but was also carried away, and Rabi, who attempted to help, met the same fate.
Family members are devastated. Sanita’s mother last spoke to her at 4pm on Saturday, when Sanita asked her to recharge her phone balance. Hours later, they learned that she and her siblings had gone missing.
Rabi’s father, Raju Shrestha, said he was in contact with his son until 3pm on Saturday, when Rabi confirmed they had reached their hotel. By 8pm, news spread on social media that Rabi was also missing. His parents and grandparents are anxiously awaiting updates, urging authorities to intensify the search immediately.
Deputy Chief District Officer Dhruba Prasad Adhikari said search operations are ongoing, with the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Army mobilised at the site.
