The two doctors involved in the surgery, Dr Prabin Nepal and Dr Sailesh Ranjitkar, testified before the NMC ethical committee on Tuesday.
“They said the patient had consented for the surgery in her left leg, and it was during mid-procedure they found the patient’s right leg had problem. They then operated the right leg,” said Dr Dhundi Poudel, who leads the committee. Dr Nepal and Dr Ranjitkar told the committee that the only mistake they made was not informing the patient’s family before operating her second leg. The hospital, however, had admitted in the incident’s wake that it was a result of “human error”.
“We have called for a consultative meeting with experts in this field. Their suggestions will be incorporated before NMC decides on the case,” said Dr Poudel.
