A source at the KU said the central leadership of ANNISU-R, the student wing of CPN (Maoist Centre), had warned that PM Dahal would not attend the convocation function unless the detained student leader was released.
Police had arrested Sushil Khanal, the assistant in-charge of the ANNISU-R university committee for vandalising the office of the KU Vice-chancellor. A group of about 15 ANNISU-R activists led by Khanal had vandalised the office of VC Ram Kantha Makaju on Monday.
The source said ANNISU-R Chairman Narendra Neupane, through the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, had pressed the KU administration for Khanal’s release.
“We had to ask police for the release of the accused to save the prestige of the university. The ruling party’s action has promoted impunity,” said the source.
Police said that they released Khanal after the university and the students came into consensus.
Meanwhile, ANNISU-R KU coordinator Achyut Bhatta said that the Prime Minister had no role in Khanal’s release.
PM’s Press Advisor Govinda Acharya also refused any intervention for the release.

The girl graduates outnumbered the boys this year. Pranita Rajbhandari of Lumbini Medical College was awarded VC gold medal for securing the highest marks in MBBS exams. While speaking at the convocation PM Dahal urged the graduates of medical science to work responsibly for the country.
