Minister for Information and Communication Sherdhan Rai inaugurated the scheme at a programme organised at the FNJ office in Tilganga, Kathmandu.
Speaking at the event, Rai said the morale of journalists will be high after the launch of insurance programme. In the first phase, insurance of 554 journalists was announced on Thursday. “This will be very helpful if journalists face any accidents while performing their duties,” Rai said, adding that the government will soon initiate the process of insurance of media equipment as well.
The insurance programme was jointly launched by FNJ and the Department of Information. Journalists having received press pass from Department of Information and FNJ are eligible for the scheme.
The government had endorsed the insurance directives in 2013 but its implementation was delayed due to technical procedures. FNJ President Mahendra Bista urged all working journalists join the insurance programme. He said journalists are still facing financial insecurity.
