Last year, the government had dropped the flyover plan saying that there was no need to construct such megastructure on the road section as it is expanded with amenities like service lane and expressway. However, the authorities are now working to redesign the entire structure to suit the road section which now boasts eight lanes.

KVRIP officials said their focus right now is on making an efficient design to compliment the road section. “This is a very sensitive project with a long-term impact. It has to be futuristic as it’s not one of those which can be demolished time and again,” said Prabhat Jha, KVRIP chief. “Our target is to at least complete the procurement process within this fiscal year,” he said.

As per the current plan, the flyover will be constructed from Bagmati bridge to Dhobikhola bridge, which will be around 800 meters long. “Our plan is to skip the New Baneshwor junction and facilitate vehicles going to Tinkune and Maitighar,” Jha said. “We should prepare the design by the next two weeks, after which we plan to send it to the Department of Roads for approval,” he said.

The authorities also plan to completely change the last blueprint adding aesthetic values. The estimated budget for the project is also likely to increase with the structure of the widened road. However, the authorities are yet to estimate exact budget required. The project was initially announced four years ago before the road section was reconstructed.
