Infamous for running a crime syndicate, racketeering and extorting businessmen, Chari had many run-ins with the authorities in the past. But he enjoyed political protection, thanks to his association with CPN-UML and its senior leader KP Sharma Oli. He was one time elected the UML vice-chairman of Dhading district committee.
On August 6, Chari was allegedly shot dead by police at Bhimdhunga, on the outskirts of Kathmandu. His death sparked furore among his supporters, including the UML lawmakers who protested his killing in the Legislature-Parliament.
