‘The Taste of Selroti’ at Kausi Theatre
Three stories, seven characters and one symbolic selroti come together in a meditation on grief and remembrance.Jony Nepal
Kausi Theatre is set to present ‘The Taste of Selroti’, a play written, designed and directed by Milson D Chamling (Milson Rai) from June 21 to July 12.
‘The Taste of Selroti’ is a two-actor theatrical production and an anthology of three stories happening across different eras, bound together by a shared theme of loss, parental grief, and longing. Blending stage performance with art and multiple dialects/languages with hints of English, Bantawa, and eastern Nepali dialects, the play walks its audience through an immersive theatrical experience.
Encompassing ‘Selroti’, a traditional Nepali sweetbread, in the title is a culturally evocative artistic choice of Rai. “It is because all three stories metaphorically intersect with each other through selroti,” he explains.
Rai’s original script for the play was selected for Kausi Theatre, Katha Ghera Productions’ grant organised on the occasion of their 8th anniversary, leading him to embark on his directorial debut with a socio-politically relevant, urgent and contemporary narrative.
Featuring Bedana Kheresungma Rai and Prayash Bantawa Rai, this two-actor play follows seven distinct characters, bridging time and the consequences of political events on the day-to-day lives of common people.
The play also incorporates traditional myths along with cinematic visuals. “I hope this projection of love, grief and longing takes the audience on a meaningful journey,” Rai adds.
