A total of 4,800 foreign tourists entered Nepal via the eastern border point of Kakarbhitta in the first five months of 2025, according to the Immigration Office at Kakarbhitta.
The figure, which excludes Indian nationals, includes travellers from 63 countries who arrived in Nepal overland between January and May. On average, 32 tourists entered the country through this route each day, the office said.
In 2024, a total of 6,101 tourists had entered Nepal via Kakarbhitta, with a daily average of 17. Compared to last year, the flow of tourists this year has nearly doubled, said Tulsi Bhattarai, chief of the immigration office in Kakarbhitta.
“Last year, around 17 foreign tourists entered Nepal daily. Now it’s around 32,” said Bhattarai. “The number of tourists entering Nepal and those leaving for India via this route is almost the same. In 2024, 6,197 tourists exited Nepal for India through Kakarbhitta.”
According to the office, 80 percent of the inbound tourists are Bhutanese nationals, followed by 10 percent from the United States. Visitors also came from Thailand, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries.
