Leaders stress timely polls, constitutional rule
In their Dashain messages President Paudel and leaders stress unity and cooperation. PM Karki to skip tika.
Post Report
President Ramchandra Paudel and senior party leaders from major political parties have called for timely election within the framework of the constitution.
Following a bloody Gen Z uprising earlier this month, the KP Oli-led government was ousted, parliament dissolved, and a new government under Sushila Karki was formed with a mandate to hold parliamentary elections on March 5, 2026.
In their Dashain messages, President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister Karki, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Speaker Devraj Ghimire, among others, have emphasised the need for timely elections and the continuity of the political system after the elections.
President Paudel, in a message issued on Monday, has stressed that elections should be completed on schedule and called for cooperation to ensure the continuity of a popularly-elected parliament and government.
“Due to the emerging issues and extraordinary circumstances in the country, as well as human casualties and physical and other damage across government, institutions, and the private sector, I urge everyone to remain restrained and manage these situations appropriately so that the scheduled elections can be completed on time to ensuring the continuity of a people-elected parliament and government."
Paudel emphasised unity and cooperation to resolve all kinds of problems in the country.
Speaker Ghimire stated that addressing the demands raised by the younger generation is possible through the rule of law and within the framework of the constitution.
He said, “The questions raised by the younger generation focus on good governance and transparency. Since our constitution is an amendable document, these demands can be addressed through the rule of law and constitutional processes. A sustainable solution can only be found through democratic practices and parliamentary supremacy. I am confident that this path will lead the country from a dark tunnel into the light.”
In his festive message, Congress chief Deuba has stated that all political complexities can be resolved through the constitution itself.
"Since the constitution is the supreme law of the land, it must also provide solutions to any political complexities that arise under special circumstances. This historic constitution—drafted by elected representatives of the Nepali people in accordance with seven decades of struggle, sacrifice, perseverance, aspirations, and wishes of the people—ensures solutions to all national complexities, as well as stability and progress for the country," he said.
"Alongside Nepal's development and prosperity, our collective contribution is essential for unity and peace. In these challenging times, I pray that Goddess Durga Bhawani blesses us all with inner strength and unwavering resolve."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Karki has decided not to receive or offer Dashain tika and jamara this year, in light of the loss of many young lives during the Gen Z movement. The death toll from the September 8-9 protests, when police fired on demonstrators with live rounds, has risen to 75, while many more are still hospitalised.
In a statement released on Monday, the prime minister's secretariat also informed the public that there will be no official tika ceremony for the prime minister this Dashain.
The statement also reaffirmed the government's firm commitment to holding the House of Representatives election on the scheduled date and establishing good governance in the country.
Meanwhile CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has claimed that the country has been caught in a geopolitical conflict and turned into a laboratory for the deep state.
Issuing a statement on Monday, General Secretary Pokharel admitted that they were unable to protect the country from the manoeuvers aimed at weakening national interests.
"Our country has been caught in a geopolitical conflict. We were unable to protect ourselves from their game aimed at undermining national power. Our country has also been turned into a laboratory for the deep state to weaken legitimate authority. We failed to earn the trust of the new generation that all problems can be solved through democratic means. We were unable to connect Nepali politics with their feelings and aspirations."
However, this does not mean that attempts to push Nepal away from pluralism, inclusiveness, democratic republic, sovereignty, and dignity will succeed, said Pokharel.
“Sooner or later, the country will return to the path of democracy and popular sovereignty…The CPN-UML is committed to decisively building national strength and advancing the construction of socialism based on Nepali characteristics, and will continue to do so."
